FKA Twigs says YouTube helped her understand what gaslighting is amid personal injury lawsuit filed by Shia LaBeouf

FKA Twigs has said that YouTube allowed her to understand her experience with gaslighting following her assault lawsuit against Shia LaBeouf.

In December 2020, the singer — real name Tahliah Barnett — filed a lawsuit against LaBeouf, accusing him of sexual assault, assault and inflicting emotional distress.

In response, the actor’s attorneys filed a “Defendant’s Response to the Complaint,” which stated that the actress denied “every single allegation” made by Twigs in her lawsuit.

In a new interview with The guardTwigs explained that after speaking out about her allegations against LaBeouf, she found solace in online communities.

“It’s really sad, but a lot of abusers use the same tactics,” she said. “Once you know the language, you can say, ‘No, that doesn’t confuse me. That’s what’s going on.’

“Thinking about it, it was very healing for me to think about the situations I found myself in and now knowing that those were love-bombing and gaslighting. I have the words for it. And if I feel confused, I can do it on YouTube. I can read about it. I can talk to people about it.”

Love-bombing is a term used to explain how romantic behaviors can morph into a manipulative dating practice, where one party uses grand gestures and constant contact to gain the upper hand.

Gaslighting describes a situation where someone convinces another person that they are losing their sense of reality and imagining things. The term was coined from the 1938 play gas light.

Twigs said she now uses her public speaking experience to help other people, explaining: “I have a friend who came out that she was in an abusive relationship with a public figure.

“Right now, the abuser is just hooking up with them online. Creating Instagram accounts. They are doing their very best to destroy what is left of their name. I said to her the other day, ‘You need to look up what a smear campaign is. He will now do anything to make you look bad. He’ll lie, he’ll confuse bad evidence.’”

Twigs’ case against LaBeouf will be heard in court next year.
