Financier Jho Low lost $26 million at a casino gambling with the ex-Goldman star

Malaysian financier Jho Low’s extravagant lifestyle was exposed this week during the embezzlement trial of ex-Goldman Sachs banker Roger Ng.

Prosecutors allege Low worked with Ng and his colleague, former Goldman banker Tim Leissner, to siphon $4.5 billion from Malaysia’s 1MDB fund – money they used to fund a lavish lifestyle. Low’s alleged antics resurfaced in testimonies from Kirk Godby, a marketing director at the Venetian Resort and Casino in Las Vegas.

Low was a regular at the Venetian, frequented the casino with an entourage and wagered vast amounts of money playing baccarat, Godby claimed in his testimony. Godby claimed to the jury that Low lost approximately $26 million playing cards during his visits to the casino, including $1.75 million during a memorable 90-minute session.

“He was extremely extravagant,” Godby told the jury. according to Bloomberg. “He had requests like no other. He made requests like he wanted disco balls, dance floors and DJs.”

Godby said Ng and Low played together during a trip to the Venetian in late 2010. Ng reportedly lost about $22,500 playing baccarat during an early morning session while the low placed about $4 million worth of bets

While prosecutors are trying to provide details of Ng’s dealings with Low, the Malaysian financier’s lavish lifestyle has been the subject of widespread scrutiny in recent years.

Early in the trial, prosecutors alleged that Low paid enormous sums to persuade high-profile celebrities to attend his parties, including $250,000 to actor Leonardo DiCaprio, $250,000 to actress Megan Fox, and $50,000 to Dollars to reality TV star and mogul Kim Kardashian.

Federal authorities previously alleged that Low used more than $8 million in embezzled funds to buy jewelry for former Victoria’s Secret model Miranda Kerr – and once hosted a Las Vegas birthday party in 2012, where Britney Spears attended jumped out of a birthday cake to serenade him.

Low has denied wrongdoing in connection with the scandal, saying in January 2020 that claims he led the conspiracy to embezzle money from Malaysia’s sovereign development fund were “simply bogus”.

He is currently a fugitive whose whereabouts are unknown as he is said to have received asylum from a nation that has yet to be identified.

Meanwhile, Ng, the former head of Goldman’s investment banking in Malaysia, faces federal charges of conspiracy to launder money and violating US anti-corruption laws. He pleaded not guilty.
