FBI agents searched for classified nuclear weapons documents as FBI agents searched former President Donald Trump’s Florida mansion, according to a report Thursday.
People familiar with the investigation told the Washington Post that the sensitive documents were among the items the FBI was pursuing in Monday’s raid.
Both the bureau and the Justice Department have come under increasing pressure to release more information since the raid on Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home.
The unnamed sources provided no further details on the specific information sought in the raid. They also did not disclose whether the documents concerned weapons from the United States or another country.
It was also unclear on Thursday night whether the secret documents were discovered by agents during the raid.
The latest reported revelation comes after Attorney General Merrick Garland said Thursday he “personally approved” the search warrant that led to the unprecedented raid on Trump’s home.
He also said the Justice Department will ask a federal judge to unseal copies of the warrant. A judge asked the Justice Department to let the court know by 3 p.m. Friday if Trump objects to the public disclosure.
A former Justice Department official told the Washington Post that top-secret information like nuclear information would lead law enforcement to quickly recover any sensitive documents that could harm U.S. security.
“If true, it would indicate that material unlawfully located in Mar-a-Lago may have been classified as top-class classified,” said David Laufman, former chief of the Department of Justice’s counterintelligence division.
“If the FBI and the Department of Justice believe that there is still top secret material at Mar-a-Lago, that would provide greater motivation to recover that material as soon as possible,” he said.
On the same day that Garland was defending the FBI against relentless criticism of the raid, a gunman attempted to storm an FBI office in Cincinnati before fleeing.
The suspect, identified as Ricky Shiffer, reportedly called for violence against the FBI after the search of Trump’s home. Shiffer was eventually shot dead by police Thursday hours after the attempted break-in.
