December 1 – Italian police have banned a fan from all sporting events for three years after he allegedly slapped a female reporter’s butt on live TV, a gesture that attracted widespread condemnation.
The man walks up behind Greta Beccaglia, 27, while she is viewed to the camera outside Italy’s Empoli stadium in Florence after the match against Fiorentina.
Saturday’s incident comes as Italy’s top league and its players are participating in a campaign to denounce violence against women. The players all wore a red mark on their faces as a sign of solidarity against harassment.
The alleged attacker is named Andrea Serrani, a Fiorentina fan.
“First he spat on his hand then slapped me hard in the back,” Beccaglia said. “Everybody saw it but no one said anything.”
What shocked many viewers of Toscana TV was the reaction of Giorgio Micheletti, her male colleague on the set, saying: “Don’t let it concern you.”
Micheletti has been criticized for the comment, and Toscana TV has said he is taking a “professional break” from the show.
