Ex-election fraudster John Haggerty Jr. forged signatures to improve Lee Zeldin’s voting line: DA

Albany County District Attorney David Soares and the State Board of Elections are moving forward with an investigation into alleged voter fraud in which Republican nominee for governor Lee Zeldin was smeared on a third line of ballots for the June 8 general election. to win against Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul.

At the center of the investigation is ex-convict John Haggerty Jr. – who was jailed for ripping off former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s campaign. Haggerty was reportedly the key player in efforts to secure the Independence Party line for Zeldin, a Long Island congressman.

Haggerty reportedly used 11,000 photocopied signatures to reach the 45,000 name threshold to get Zeldin the extra party line, the Times Union revealed on Sunday.

“Nothing could have gone outside without his knowledge,” an anonymous GOP source told the newspaper from upstate.

Zeldin’s campaign was not involved in transmitting the photocopied signatures.

Haggerty spent more than a year in the slammer after being convicted of money laundering and grand larceny for stealing about $750,000 from New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s 2009 re-election campaign.

After leaving prison, Haggerty worked for Donald Trump during his 2016 presidential campaign with the blessing of right-wing New York arsonist Carl Paladino.

A spokeswoman for state GOP chair Nick Langworthy – who previously said the Zeldin campaign and the state party are “fully integrated on a daily basis” – blasted the probe as politically motivated.

“This is all an attempt to distract from Kathy Hochul’s corrupt scheme that landed her top donor a $637 million no-bid deal where she paid double the value for COVID testing for $300,000 in kickbacks to receive for their campaign. Not only will she be put out of work by voters this November, but she should be prosecuted,” spokeswoman Jessica Proud said.

Zeldin, meanwhile, remained silent on the revelations of possible criminal behavior by his political allies.

“There is nothing else to add,” said Zeldin.

“I’m not going to speculate,” Zeldin said when asked if he would stand by Haggerty while he faces prosecution over the alleged voter fraud.

Democrats are trying to use the issue against Zeldin ahead of the Nov. 8 election, especially given that Zeldin’s campaign manager, Eric Amidon, is listed 47 times in the petition as a point of contact for any issues with the Election Committee.

As a congressman, Lee Zeldin supported legal efforts to overturn the 2020 election and promoted baseless conspiracy theories under the banner of “election integrity,” but apparently that doesn’t apply to his own campaign,” Hochul campaign director Brian Lenzmeier said in a statement .

The BOE and Soares did not respond to requests for comment.
