It’s been six years since the last mainline entry in the Mafia franchise, but a new entry may finally be in development. Early reports suggest that a Mafia prequel is currently in the works, and while it’s still early days, more and more leaked details are piling up.

Over the course of 20 years and three staggered releases, the Mafia series has grown into one of the most popular 2K games. With the trilogy re-released in 2020, it seems fans of the series won’t have to wait long for a fourth story.

Is there a release date for Mafia 4?

As we haven’t seen confirmation of the project yet, there is currently no release date for the next mafia game. Likewise, it’s too early to announce a rough release window as well.

That earliest reports from Kotaku indicate that the title is in “very early development” at this point. As a result, Mafia’s next entry could be a few years from now, assuming all goes according to plan.

So fans who are eagerly awaiting a new mafia game would do well not to hold their breath. We may not see the title in action until late 2023 or 2024 at the earliest.

With the next Mafia project yet to set a release window, it’s also unclear which platforms it might target.

While no official details have been announced yet, it’s safe to assume that current-gen hardware is on the cards as the next entry is said to be in the early stages of development. PS5, Xbox Series X | S and PC all seem likely for the next mafia game.

From the very first reports of a new mafia project, Kotaku claimed the developers of Hangar 13 were working on a prequel. Reportedly codenamed “Nero,” the fourth entry in the series could take players back in time to the events of the very first game.

The yet-to-be-confirmed mafia prequel will reportedly focus on the Salieri family.

More comments from Xbox Era Host Nick Baker hints that the prequel will be set between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with an alleged focus on Don Salieri, a boss from the original game.

Obviously, these early details are worth taking with a pinch of salt for now. Since the developers have not made anything official yet, there is no guarantee that these initial claims are true. As always, plans are subject to change as development progresses.
