Every single headline act and lineup poster since the California festival began

AHead of Coachella’s much-anticipated return – after a three-year hiatus due to the pandemic – we’ve been following the musical evolution of the event. From the rock years of the early 2000s to more recent pop and rap brand names, we’ve also captured every one of the festival’s iconic lineup posters.

1999 – Beck, Rage Against the Machine, Tool

Coachella’s entry into the festival world fitted in perfectly with the post-grunge era, hence the early headlining of influential rock bands Rage Against the Machine and Tool. Also on the program were the experimental sounds of Beck, who rose to popularity in the 1990s with his eclectic combination of hip-hop, folk and rock.

2001 – Jane’s Addiction

Due to its Southern California location, a drought brought the festival to a halt in 2000. It made its comeback in 2001, but with a smaller cast. For their one-day event, they invited Jane’s Addiction to pick up the tab.

2002 – Bjork, Oasis

Icelandic singer Björk’s overseas success was cemented by her invitation to the desert event as the first female headliner. The following day’s massive list consisted of Oasis, Foo Fighters, The Strokes and The Prodigy, ushering in the return of the event’s original two-day format.

2003 – Beastie Boys, Red Hot Chili Peppers

Welcoming the Beastie Boys and Red Hot Chili Peppers to the main stage doubled the importance of rock music. The camping ritual on site also began this weekend. The fans could now return to their tents after a tireless day of fan favorites.

2004 – Radiohead, The Cure

2004’s headliners included the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers, Radiohead and The Cure at the festival’s first-ever sold-out event. Those performances would mark the first of many returns to Coachella for both acts.

2005 – Coldplay, Nine Inch Nails

Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor played one of his first sober shows in the desert, shortly after a stint in rehab. Coldplay also made their US headlining debut months before the release of their third album X&Ycement their place as one of the biggest bands in the world.

2006 – Depeche Mode, Tool

Although Depeche Mode and Tool were the main attractions of the weekend, electronic duo Daft Punk’s lavish LED pyramid performance made Coachella history.

2007 – Bjork, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rage Against the Machine

To compete with Lollapalooza’s recent expansion from a two-day event to three days, the 2007 Coachella festival mimicked the expansion. It brought back previous headliners, and Billboard hailed Rage Against the Machine’s return as the group’s second-best festival performance of all time.

2008 – Prince, Roger WateJack Johnson

As a last-minute attempt to boost ticket sales, Prince was added to the theater schedule just weeks before the 2008 festival is due. The decision proved successful as the initial lineup of Roger Waters and Jack Johnson had hampered sales.

2009 – Paul McCartney, The Killers, The Cure

Paul McCartney became the first Beatle to headline the Mojave tent, with his opening-day performance surpassing his allotted time by 54 minutes. But veteran topliner The Cure was unplugged on Sunday as they crossed the midnight curfew.

2010 – Jay Z, Muse, Gorillaz

Instead of selling day passes, Coachella tested a new strategy of only offering three day passes. Although the reaction varied, thousands still flocked out. Jay-Z became their first-ever rap headliner.

2011 – Kings of Leon, Arcade Fire, Kanye West, The Strokes

Despite the current Kanye West controversy, this headliner of 2011 remains undisputedly one of hip-hop’s biggest festival sets by critics. In addition, fellow headliners Kings of Leon, Arcade Fire and The Strokes provided an unforgettable weekend of gigantic music.

2012 – The Black Keys, Radiohead, Dr. Dre & Snoop Dogg

As the festival grew in popularity, its original one-weekend was extended to two weekends in 2012, and the festival has continued the format ever since. The joint appearance of Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg made headlines when they resurrected the late Tupac as a 3D holographic figure to play a few songs for the crowd.

2013 – Blur, The Stone Roses, Phoenix, Red Hot Chili Peppers

The British reigned with Blur and The Stone Roses, followed by the Red Hot Chilli Pepper’s third return to the desert. Further down the lineup was the Wu-Tang Clan, but their outstanding show proved they had great energy on the main stage.

2014 – OutKast, Muse, Arcade Fire

In 2014, EDM finally supplanted rock band headliners. Calvin Harris, Skrillex, and Disclosure all made important spots behind OutKast, Muse, and Arcade Fire.

2015 – ACDC, Jack White, Drake

Tickets were gone within 20 minutes of going on sale, and with good reason. Not only were people presented with a legendary roster of ACDC, Jack White and Drake, the latter broke the internet when his special guest Madonna – the Queen of Pop – planted a kiss on the rapper’s lips live on stage.

2016 – LCD Sound System, Guns N’ Roses, Calvin Harris

Coachella 2016 was a reunion for two of its three headliners; Guns N’ Roses’ Axl Rose and Slash made amends after a decade-long split, and LCD Soundsystem reunited after announcing their breakup in 2011.

2017 – Radiohead, Lady Gaga, Kendrick Lamar

When Beyoncé became pregnant with twins, she pulled out of her headlining slot, leaving Lady Gaga in her place. Kendrick Lamar also made his debut before returning the following year in a surprise collaboration with Vince Staples during the finale of his set.

2018 – The Weeknd, Beyoncé, Eminem

“Beychella” was coined after the iconic Beyoncé made history as the first black woman to headline the festival. Her performance was later the subject of the 2019 Netflix documentary homecoming. Eminem and The Weeknd rounded out the list for an event packed with R&B and rap.

2019 – Childish Gambino, Tame Impala, Ariana Grande

In the year before the pandemic ended major music venues, the high-profile artists spanned the musical spectrum with hip-hop from Childish Gambino, pop from Ariana Grande and alternative indie from Tame Impala. Grande’s guest appearance from Justin Timberlake’s boy band NSYNC made for a remarkable weekend.

2022 – Harry Styles, Billie Eilish, Ye

The upcoming festival has invited music’s biggest names to revive it after its three-year hiatus. Harry Styles makes his desert debut alongside Billie Eilish and Kanye West. However, Ye’s recent “concerned online behavior” has led to him being subjected to a recent fan petition to ban him from headlining. While the 2022 Grammys officially barred him from performing, it remains to be seen if Coachella will follow suit.

Coachella will be held April 15-17 and April 22-24 at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California.
