‘Eternals’ VFX Supervisor Confirms Pip The Troll Is A Last Minute Addition

the eternal VFX supervisor Stephane Ceretti has confirmed that Pip the Troll is a last-minute addition to the film.

One of the biggest surprises in Marvel Studios’ the eternal is when Harry Styles appears in the film’s mid-credits as Eros, brother of Thanos. Joining him is his trusty sidekick Pip the Troll, played by comedian Patton Oswalt. Although their appearances were rather brief, it is expected that both Eros and Pip the Troll will hold prominent positions in future Marvel Cinematic Universe projects.

Some have criticized Pip the Troll’s visuals, with many believing the character’s design isn’t up to par with other CG characters in the MCU. It turns out that trolls are a late addition to the eternal lined up. VFX supervisor Stephane Ceretti revealed to The Wrap that the film originally had a different ending and that Pip the Troll was a new addition to the final product.

“And we captured it during additional photography. That’s another ending. “

“Actually it’s still with Harry Styles, but it’s on the spaceship with all the other Eternals. It’s a bit sadder, and not as exciting in a way, so it doesn’t resonate. Chloe had the idea to include Pip, the troll, as his sidekick for the end of the movie. We ended up doing it pretty quickly.”

Ceretti described the process as “challenging to… get it done in time” but in the end the character was brought to life.

“…Finally you put a CG character next to Harry Styles for the first time. And you’re thinking, “Hmm, Harry Styles is going to be hard to beat.” That’s what it is. I still think it was a fun moment. I still think that’s a lot of room for fun stories later. I hope it’s a character we’ll see more of, because he’s hilarious. The funny thing is that Patton agreed to do it. And I think the best thing, there’s a lot of good possibilities because of that. And Harry doing that is also just a wonderful thing. “

Here is the synopsis of the movie:

The story takes place in two time periods. A storyline set in the past when they functioned as a formidable team and a close-knit family unit. The second plot is in the present, when the group has broken up and divided, content to live among people, hiding in sight. The common threat of the Deviant, once again threatening the very existence of humanity, means that the Eternals need to put their differences aside and regroup.

Directed by Chloe Zhao the eternal from a screenplay she co-wrote with Patrick Burleigh, Kaz Firpo and Ryan Firpo. The cast of the Marvel Studios project includes Gemma Chan as Sersi, Richard Madden as Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Lia McHugh as Sprite, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari, Barry Keoghan as Druig, Don Lee as Gilgamesh, Kit Harington as Dane Whitman, Salma Hayek as Ajak, Angelina Jolie as Thena, Harry Styles as Starfox and Mahershala Ali as Blade.
