Only now can SunSport reveal the incredible details of that meeting, as the straight-talking Dutchman gave it United chiefs an uncompromising dressing.

Both Fletcher and Murtough flew back to Manchester in shock after Ten Hag revealed exactly what he thinks is wrong with United.

A senior Old Trafford source said: “It was like United being interviewed by Ten witch rather than the other way around.”

Red Devils chief executive Richard Arnold has since flown to the Dutch capital to meet in person with the man he hopes can rebuild the shattered fallen giants.

Ten Hag is said to have “torn the United setup apart” and most notably criticized their scouting and recruiting policies.

The club have spent around £1billion on new players in the nine years since Sir Alex Ferguson stepped down but are now in worse shape than they have been for the past three decades.

United officials initially took a few days to digest what Ten Hag was telling them, but concluded that they were impressed rather than annoyed by his candid assessment and vision for the club.

As revealed by SunSport, the club had already made him their No 1 target after compiling a detailed dossier of all the top candidates for the job at United.

These included Paris Saint-Germain and former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino. Ten Hag doesn’t want the overall power that the likes of Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho craved.

However, his interview made it clear that he thinks behind-the-scenes attitudes need to be shaken up.

While both meetings with Ten Hag were face-to-face, Poch’s was done on Zoom and things didn’t go too well.

The French giants have since complained to United about the public promotion of their manager despite him not being their first choice.

Pochettino spoke about how much money would be needed to overhaul the squad he was willing to let go of many.

PSG also wanted to hold out in order to get a higher sacking fee for a manager they seem willing to sack anyway.

Ajax, meanwhile, are happy to negotiate and allow their manager to leave for a fee of around £2million.

United will likely miss out on the Champions League and maybe even European football altogether.

And that could severely hurt the club’s spending power this summer.

However, they are confident that Ten Hag can bring out the best in an already talented, albeit underperforming, squad.

One to slip in the Premier League.

Interim boss Ralf Rangnick took over after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked in November and has since registered just eight wins in 17 Premier League games.

That makes him United’s worst manager of the Prem era – with a win rate of just 47 per cent.

Discontent within the fanbase is growing as another planned protest march is organized at Old Trafford for tomorrow’s home game against rock-bottom Norwich.

A win in their last five league games has put United in seventh place, six points behind Tottenham in fourth place – their last qualifying spot for the Champions League.

The Red Devils’ Round of 16 defeat by Atletico Madrid in the Champions League last month meant they will now be without a trophy for the fifth straight season.

Ten Hag’s arrival at Old Trafford will make it five permanent bosses since Ferguson’s retirement in 2013 – in addition to David Moyes, Van Gaal, Mourinho and Solskjaer – with two caretaker managers in Ryan Giggs and Michael Carrick, as well as interim Rangnick.

The club know this summer’s appointment is the biggest decision in their recent history.

United are set to announce Ten Hag’s arrival before the end of this season, but not before Sunday’s Dutch Cup final between Ajax and PSV Eindhoven.

They are also in a title race with PSV, which they lead by four points with five games to go.

If they won the Eredivisie it would be the third in a row under Ten Hag.
