Footage from onlookers showed flames rising from sidewalks and onto the road, the Telegraph reported.

A nightclub was also closed as East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service erected a fence around the fire.

The England team is understood to have “made the evacuation in their stride,” although it marks another unfortunate phase in the construction of the Continent.

Last week Jones lost captain Owen Farrell to a “bizarre” ankle injury while wing Jonny May was ruled out with a knee injury and Joe Marler was sent home after contracting Covid-19 .

Courtney Lawes, who was invited to replace Farrell as captain, is meanwhile unable to train this week as he undergoes a return to competition protocols following a concussion.

However, Jones often preaches the need to be “comfortable when uncomfortable” and has found this a useful exercise in team building despite this inconvenience.

Joe Marler, supporter of England and the Harlequins, has tested positive for Covid-19 for the second time in three months.

Marler has withdrawn from the England squad for this week’s training camp in Brighton. After returning a positive lateral flow test result on Tuesday morning, he was immediately placed in isolation. A follow-up PCR test performed that morning confirmed the results.

All other England players and staff have undergone daily lateral flow tests – all have come back negative.

England will not call up a substitute, with the rest of the squad training in Brighton until Friday ahead of next weekend’s Six Nations opener against Scotland.
