Kelvin Fletcher supports mental health in farming campaign
Former Serious Dance champion Kelvin Fletcher is urging everyone in the farming community to check in on their loved ones as he pledges to support an industry mental health campaign.
The former Emmerdale star, who last year bought a 120-acre ranch in Peak County, is supporting Farm Safety’s Mind Your Head campaign.
Farm safety charity Yellow Wellies, says many people living and working in rural communities “are suffering and doing so in silence”.
According to Office for National Statistics (ONS) figures, there were a total of 44 registered suicides in England and Wales by people working in agriculture and agriculture in 2020.
The organization says a recent study shows that mental health issues among farmers and farm workers are growing in concern and have a direct impact on safety on farms.
A survey of 450 farmers under the age of 40 found that 92 per cent cited poor mental health as the biggest potential problem farmers face today – up from 82 per cent in 2018.
Meanwhile, a separate survey of 250 farmers over the age of 40 found that 84% said this is one of the biggest problems farmers face.
