According to a report Wednesday, two inmates serving time at New Jersey’s only all-women state prison became pregnant after having sex with a transgender inmate.
The unidentified inmates became pregnant at Edna Mahan Correctional Facility after having “consensual sexual relations with another inmate,” the state Department of Corrections told NJ.com.
In 2021, New Jersey enacted a policy allowing inmates to be housed according to their preferred gender identity.
The policy was part of a settlement in a civil rights lawsuit filed by a woman who was forced to live in men’s prisons for 18 months.
The Jersey Correctional Facility holds more than 800 prisoners, including 27 transgender women, where trans women do not need to have gender reassignment surgery to be held there.
