GALVESTON, Texas (KTRK) — Police are investigating a doctor who was killed Friday morning while riding a bicycle in Galveston, police said.

Investigators believe that Dr. Nancy Lefeber Hughes, 67, was struck by a vehicle and killed while riding her bicycle on Seawall Boulevard and East Beach Drive.

Authorities say it’s unclear when Hughes was struck by a vehicle.

Around 7 a.m., a driver found Hughes unresponsive on the roadway.

According to Lt. Xavier Hancock there are no witnesses to the fatal crash, making it difficult to give details.

The initial report was ruled a hit-and-run, but police could not confirm that information as of 1:19 p.m. Friday, Hancock said.

However, initial calls suggest police are looking for a vehicle with front-end damage, according to Hancock.

Police plan to release more information later today.

Hughes was a second-generation doctor. her father, dr. Edward James Lefeber, has been providing medical care in Galveston since 1939.
