Donations from North Carolina reaching frontline hospitals in Ukraine

RALEIGH, NC (WNCN) – The Ukrainians in the Carolinas group said the generosity of North Carolinars has reached people in cities across Ukraine.

Since the Russian attack on Ukraine began, the Triangle’s Ukrainian community has been inundated with donations.

On Sunday they shipped their third container load of medical supplies, clothing and basic necessities.

“We just pray that this gets there safely and quickly and helps the people there,” said organizer Olena Kozlova-Pates. “Our last supplies went from Kyiv to Lviv to Mykolaiv to Odessa.”

Pates shared photos and videos sent to her from the front lines, showing previous shipments of medical supplies going to the hands of hospitals in need.

Other Ukrainian-Americans have taken it upon themselves to deliver donated supplies to loved ones abroad, such as Slava Petukhova, who recently returned after bringing military supplies to western Ukraine.

“It’s all materialistic stuff. You cannot return the destroyed roads,” Petukhova said. “When it all started, I used to watch every morning. You wake up and think what if my street was destroyed.”

Petukhova said what she heard and saw was “heartbreaking”.

She joined dozens of other volunteers packing boxes at the Triangle on Sunday afternoon.

For her and many other Ukrainians whose family and friends are still far away, the supplies mean more than just boxes. They’re a way to fight from afar for a country they love.

Petukhova said she sees the same spirit of resilience in Ukrainians both in North Carolina and at home.

“It’s like in this church, everyone is running around trying to figure out what to do, how to help,” Petukhova said.

Sunday delivery is also being coordinated with help from North Carolina-based Beast Philanthropy.
