Other artists on the project, produced by Feinstein and Kyle Lehning – best known for his work with Randy Travis – include Rosanne Cash, Lyle Lovett, Lee Ann Womack, Ronnie Milsap, Mandy Barnett, Amy Grant and The Time Jumpers with Vince Gill.

The late poet Maya Angelou inspired Feinstein for the country album. “I was with her at her house in Winston-Salem and she started playing me her favorite country records and I noticed many of these wonderful, over-the-top voices. to another voice,” he said Billboards. “It was the first seed for the project, although it didn’t materialize until many years later. After starting the artistic process of ‘casting’ the duets, I started making lists and listening to more. I knew the work of many of the most prominent country stars and began to explore their work on how they might sound when they sang a Gershwin song together. Kyle Lehning is instrumental, as he knows and has worked with many artists on record and without him I would still try to make a choice. ”

Pairing George and Ira Gershwin’s soft, sophisticated tunes with country artists might seem like an odd fit, but it made complete sense to Feinstein.

“The best lyric translators right now are country singers,” he said in a statement. “The deeper place of a song comes from connecting lyrically with the story and telling it in a real and simple way. Country artists are the last bastion of that art.”

Feinstein, one of the current leading interpreters of the Great American Songbook, has long been fascinated by Gershwins, beginning with six years as Ira Gershwin’s assistant and archivist when Feinstein was 20 years old. He has released several Gershwin projects, including his 1987 debut, Pure Gershwin and in 1998 Michael & George: Feinstein Sings Gershwin. The latter album earned him a Grammy nomination for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album, one of only five albums he has received in his career.

Initially frustrated by the delay caused by the pandemic, Feinstein ultimately appreciated the extra game time. “I am grateful that we recorded the songs live with the band in Nashville, but as the world changed, this project went into production and our timeline went out the window. ,” I said. “Finish music and complete recording requires waiting until it is safe for singers, songwriters and producers to return to the studio for editing. The unexpected delay gave me and Kyle Lehning, a true genius of a producer, a longer life with it that was priceless. “

Given the perfection of the source material, Feinstein’s standards were very high. “I wanted to create something truly timeless like the Gershwin catalog,” he says. “We feel that we have succeeded and the best part is that I am delighted that this celebration of Gershwin and the American Songbook is being introduced to a whole new audience of people who will visually react to it. what they hear. Its official release this spring will give us the opportunity to schedule some dates to support the album and let people experience these tunes in person and on record. It’s all a matter of great luck.”
