Does Apex Legends have skill-based matchmaking? SBMM explained

Skill-based matchmaking will always be a contentious topic in online gaming, and the Apex Legends community is no different; but does respawns battle royale use SBMM? Here’s everything you need to know.

As every Apex Legends player (and online player in general) knows, a competent, communicative team is often the key to success.

While you can of course recruit friends who you know can pop heads and take names, queuing in a random match is much more variable. Sometimes you’ll get teammates who absolutely demolish the competition, or others who don’t.

This has led to questions about Apex Legends’ Skill-based Matchmaking System (SBMM) – and whether it even exists. Here’s everything you need to know about the feature and how it works in Respawn’s classic Battle Royale.

What is SBMM?

Skill-Based Matchmaking (SBMM) is the general term for a system for matching teammates and opponents in an online multiplayer game.

Every game is slightly different, but information such as time played, average score, K/D ratio, win/loss ratio, and other factors are often used to determine which teammates and opponents you get in a game.

It’s sometimes controversial as it can lead to the feeling that every match is too tough because all your enemies are just as good as you. On the other hand, it prevents newer or less experienced players from being put off from playing because they have to play against players who are much better or more experienced than them.

Does Apex Legends have skill-based matchmaking?

Yes, Apex Legends uses SBMM to ensure that players of similar skill and experience become partners and also compete against enemies of the same level.

SBMM is used in both regular and ranked games. Yes – SBMM is still used even in unranked casual games.

In ranked play, this should mean that a Predator player will queue up with other Predators and Master level players, while Bronze players will be lumped in with other players of the same rank. However, this is not always possible due to different player counts in certain regions or the number of players online at certain times of the day.

The higher you get, the deadlier your opponents become, but you’ll also queue up with higher-level players to claim the throne.

Fortunately, your teammates should be of a similar level as you.

What is your Apex Legends skill rating based on?

No matter what anyone tells you, there’s no way to know exactly how SBMM is calculated in Apex Legends. Respawn, like most game developers, will never disclose this because if players know the inner workings of the system, it could be exploited much more easily.

However, we can safely assume that a number of factors are taken into account. This can include:

  • Your account level / time played
  • Your statistics, such as B. K/D ratio, win/loss ratio, average damage per game
  • It doesn’t matter whether you play alone or with a team
  • How long you played or if you took a longer break

Some players also believe that their recent performances will affect SBMM. For example, if your last game was really easy for you and you dominated the opponents, you might face slightly tougher opponents in the next game.

However, this is far from proven and is simply based on how players feel in certain games.

Is the Apex Legends SBMM “broken”?

Since the early days of Apex Respawn’s SBMM, it has come under fire for being “broken”. Back in 2019, Eric “Ghost” Hewitt, Lead Competitive Development Manager, noted that “there is indisputable evidence through data that [SBMM] helps 80-90% of the community retain customers for most of these games.”

Of course, the game has come a long way since then, but the developers are still struggling with the SBMM issue. In December, 2021, leaderboard designer Aaron ‘Exgeniar’ L. responded to fans’ concerns about the system, writing, “Pub’s matchmaking can be a bit volatile at times. It’s on my radar.”

Respawn developers are always trying to keep up to date with matchmaking issues and are working on improvements to make matches fairer and with the best connection.

Does Apex Legends use EOMM?

There has long been a rumor that Apex Legends uses a different system called “EOMM” instead of SBMM. EOMM stands for “Engagement-Optimized Matchmaking”. This system prioritizes keeping you playing rather than keeping games fair and balanced. It was patented by EA for use in FIFA matchmaking.

However, Respawn devs have denied that EOMM is used in Apex Legends, “Apex matchmaking is designed for skill. It’s not literally designed to make you lose, spend, or gamble longer.”

So that’s all you need to know about Apex Legends’ skill-based matchmaking system and how the developers might change it in the future.
