Benedict Wong has condemned the trolling of his 16-year-old Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness co-star Xochitl Gomez.
In the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe blockbuster, Gomez will play America Chavez, a cross-dimensional hero portrayed as gay in the comics.
Multiverse of Madnessa sequel from 2016 Doctor Strangehas been denied a theatrical release in Saudi Arabia due to a low amount of LGBT+ content in the film.
Reports suggest that a scene in which Chavez alludes to having two mothers has proved particularly problematic inside the country, where same-sex sexual activity is criminalized.
Speak with AsiaOne, Gomez said, “It’s a big deal to have America in this movie. It’s just huge. And I’m just so happy that Marvel stuck with it and kept the scene in there. And it’s just pretty crazy that I’m the one playing America.
“Although, yeah, my name might be circled in hate and stuff, but it’s okay.”
Wong then chimed in to offer his thoughts on the matter, condemning some of the trolling Gomez appears to have received.
“It’s not okay. It’s not okay,” he said. “We all need to understand together that … she auditioned at age 13 and came to us at 14, one of the youngest actresses to join the MCU [in a] movie of this magnitude. You know she’s just a young girl playing her part and kudos for that.
“So there’s a real sense of shame for all these trolls who are cowardly not to really put their faces on and they should be deeply ashamed of what they are doing. Let’s all just play nice. Let’s all just enjoy… what we represent.
“It’s sad that the fans in this country can’t see it yet. But all we do is radiate representation, expressing the voiceless. And that’s all we can do – portray people in a way that they can be seen.”
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness comes to UK cinemas on Thursday 5th May.
