CNN Plus, the newly launched paid streaming service, is already being discontinued.

News of his troubles surfaced earlier this week when axios reports that CNN’s parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery, had marketing suspended for the much-vaunted service, prompting widespread speculation that the product would not last much longer. It will officially close on April 30th.

Current CNN Plus subscribers will receive “prorated subscription fee refunds,” according to CNN and WBD.

Chris Licht, the new head of CNN Worldwide, hinted that some versions of CNN Plus could be integrated into one of the company’s larger streaming services. “As we become Warner Bros. Discovery, CNN will be at its strongest as part of WBD’s streaming strategy, which sees news as an important part of a compelling broader offering along with sports, entertainment and nonfiction content,” Licht said in a statement .

On social media, Thursday’s rapid demise of CNN Plus immediately drew comparisons to Quibi, the ill-fated streaming service founded by Jeffrey Katzenberg that collapsed after six months. However, CNN Plus appears to be at least partially a victim of inter-bureau politics, as the bosses of WBD — formed from a recently completed merger between AT&T’s WarnerMedia assets and Discovery Inc. — don’t appear to have been fans of the concept. as diversity reports.

CNN Plus didn’t offer a live feed from its eponymous cable network, but rather accompanying content with additional programs and CNN personalities – a source of confusion for some customers who expected it to act as an extension of CNN itself. The service costs $6 per month or $60 per year.
