Do FA Cup matches have replays or extra time and penalties used if the quarter-finals are tied? – The sun

The FA Cup quarter-finals are here.
But what happens when games are tied, will there be a replay to decide who advances to the next round?
The FA Cup replay rules have changed extensively in recent years and 2021-22 is no different, particularly due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Will FA Cup matches be played in replays or extra time and penalties?
The FA Cup will not be repeated this season to reduce game congestion.
Replays were first eliminated in 2016 from the quarterfinals onwards.
And then they were completely scrapped last season because of Covid-19.
Due to this season’s build-up play caused by the pandemic, replays from the third round onwards have again been halted.
Matches that end in a draw are now settled with 30 minutes overtime and a penalty shoot-out if necessary.
However, the FA plans to bring back repeats in the third and fourth rounds of next season.
Which FA Cup rounds have replays and which go to extra time?
- Third round – extra time and penalty shootout (since 2020/21)
- Fourth round – extra time and penalty shootout (since 2020/21)
- Fifth round – extra time and penalty shootout (since 2018/19)
- Quarter-finals – extra time and penalty shootout (since 2016/17)
- Semi-finals – extra time and penalty shootout (since 1999/00)
- Final – extra time and penalty shootout (since 1993/94)
