DJ LeMahieu Homer continues to impress the Yankees after surgery

DJ LeMahieu made a nice play down the line at first base and went deep for the first time this spring in Wednesday’s 7-1 win over the Orioles at Steinbrenner Field.

Manager Aaron Boone continues to be impressed with how LeMahieu looks following off-season surgery to repair a sports fracture.

“We pulled the plug at the end of last year [on his season] because it’s come to this,” Boone said. “DJ is as tough as it gets. He plays stuff all the time.

“In my eyes it was the only decision that had to be made in the past year and especially in the last few weeks and days. He’s 100 percent now.”

Anthony Volpe landed a good throw from the top of eighth in the final after making a nice backhand stop.

“He’s a good player,” Boone said of the prospect. “He can play. He has the ball in the hole, puts his feet in a good position. It was a highlight of his improved arm strength and he did it with relative ease.”

Newly signed Marwin Gonzalez expects to be in the lineup on Thursday – weather permitting. Gonzalez is among the players whose chances of a major league roster could be hurt by the truncated spring training season.

“It’s not ideal as we only have a couple of weeks here,” Boone said of the shortened camp. “The good thing is that it is clear that he has been working [before he got here].”

With news that the rosters will be expanded to 28 players due to reduced spring training to open the season, Boone said the Yankees would likely use them for additional pitchers, but they will assess the roster’s needs when the regular season begins is getting closer. … Aroldis Chapman is expected to see his first Grapefruit League action on Friday, according to Boone.
