Disney’s Magic of Storytelling is helping give away 11,000 books

NEW YORK – On a beautiful March day in New York City’s Chinatown, students and their parents lined the block for a surprising reason: books!

“Today we are a pleasure machine. We’ve given away 11,000 books here at PS 1,” said Randi Weingarten, President of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), who spoke passionately at the event about the importance of getting books into the hands of children.

The AFT worked in partnership with the United Federation of Teachers (UFT), First Book and Disney to bring the incredible event to life and inspire the next generation of storytellers.

“One of our goals is to truly create the next generation of diverse creators, thinkers and leaders, and to truly inspire children to create the world they want to live in,” notes Kieran Viola, Disney Hyperion’s editorial director.

“The Walt Disney Company has partnered with First Book for 20 years, and during that time we have donated millions of books and other resources to educators serving children in need,” she continued.

“It’s nice to see all these different books and not just English books. It’s nice to see the Spanish books and the Chinese books. When I walked in, it put a nice smile on my face for the rest of the day,” said an alumni of PS 1 Alfred E. Smith Elementary School, where the event was held.
