In a statement, he apologized to his family for causing them “humiliation” – but expressed no remorse for groping his victim.

Southwark Crown Court heard Khan, a gay Muslim who was elected to Parliament in 2019, forced the then-teenager down a gin and tonic, dragged him upstairs, pinned him onto a bed and asked him to lie down before the attack Viewing house pornography Staffordshire in January 2008.

But today Khan, 48, said: “I don’t know how to express the shock of the last three days. I’ve been labeled a sexual predator, an outcast, and worse.”

He vowed to appeal the verdict and continued: “While the trial is ongoing, I don’t think it would normally be appropriate to resign.

“Due to long delays in the legal process, however, my constituents have been without visible parliamentary representation for a year.”

He continued: “I have therefore unfortunately come to the conclusion that it is intolerable for voters to go years without an MP to reinforce their voice in Parliament.”

Khan said his resignation allows him to focus on clearing his name.

His resignation will lead to a by-election in his Red Wall seat in the coming weeks.
