DICE accidentally created a Battlefield 2042 Portal XP bot farm

We’re only a few weeks into the new year, and the developers of Battlefield 2042 have found themselves in a hot water.

This week, DICE’s much-anticipated return to the office from the holiday season brought us a new minor patch and the promise of larger changes and a new transcript design in February as part of larger patch. Portal developer Ripple Effect has also launched a new XP leveling system for community-generated experiences in an attempt to bring back the XP earned on those servers, without leaving some people with can create XP farming mode.

The changes weren’t particularly well received, but players certainly don’t expect the Official Portal experience to also get into the game of farming bots. Along with the new Portal rules, Ripple Effect has refreshed the official list of available experiences, introducing a new zombie survival mode.

The setup for this experience is basic; the player must fend off waves of knife-wielding soldiers, controlled by AI. With each subsequent wave, the difficulty of the enemy gets harder and harder. Unfortunately, since the Official Portal experience can enjoy the full amount of XP earned and unlock the ribbon with no limits, zombie mode is quickly becoming an easy XP farming tool for those players want to level up, unlock attachments, or progress through the proficiency ranks.

The Battlefield 2042 subreddit took very little time to appreciate the developer, showing how easy the new mode makes XP farming. Some have even started posting tips on the safest places to camp where zombies can’t reach you, as well as the best time to give up/die for maximum farming efficiency.

The irony is that coming on the same day as the arrival of the new XP limits is not lost on developers, but it looks like it could be a bug that can’t be forced.

Senior Design Director at Ripple Effect, Justin Wiebe, apologized to fans on Twitter.

“I won’t lie, this shouldn’t have passed our review process,” Wiebe tweeted. “I think our desire to create a fun zombie mode obscured our ability to see something as simple as its impact on development. I’m very impressed. sorry for the trouble this has caused.”

Zombie mode will likely be phased out soon, assuming some fixes can be made to prevent it from becoming the hottest XP farming spot in Battlefield 2042.
