Devarjaye Daniel: 10-year-old boy battling brain and spine cancer, sworn in as honorary officer in Montgomery County

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) – A 10-year-old boy battling brain and spine cancer has been sworn in as an honorary officer with more than 25 law enforcement agencies in Montgomery County.

Devarjaye Daniel (DJ) is not just an ordinary cop, Houston ISD police have taken it a step further.

“We’re not going to swear him in as a cop today,” one officer said. “Today, we will swear him by as HISD’s sheriff.”

No new sheriff would be complete without police patches, pins, and gifts. “It was amazing,” said the DJ. “From the very first one, me and my brothers were overwhelmed.”

DJ started his journey a few weeks ago and he has successfully achieved his goal of joining 100 law enforcement agencies.

This started with a friendship with the sheriff of Freeport. Freeport police have worked with other children battling cancer in the past. Since joining Freeport’s management company, Daniel has not slowed down. “Just a great story, and we’re just proud to be a part of that very long story,” said Montgomery County Sheriff Rand Henderson.

After achieving his goal, Daniel’s family knows as his battle with cancer, this journey is not over.

“I told him, I said you know it’s not over,” said the DJ’s father, Theo Daniel. “This love and support will come. You’ve had so many years. I don’t think you’ll get everyone that you’ll get most of them.” But how many more patches can the DJ put on the uniform? Daniel said: “I would increase it to about 2,000.

A more influential target is the boy who is battling cancer. “We’ve had some tough weeks, some tough years in law enforcement, but things like this, and events like this, and kids like this make them,” explains Henderson. I come back for more.”
