Democratic Mayor of El Paso Oscar Leeser defends sending migrants to New York

The Democratic mayor of El Paso, Texas, on Sunday defended his move to send his own buses carrying migrants to New York City — with the permission of Mayor Eric Adams — and said his goal was to “help them achieve their goal.” to reach”.

“People don’t come to El Paso, they come to America, and that’s really important,” Mayor Oscar Leeser said during an appearance on ABC’s This Week.

However, many of the asylum seekers from Venezuela have no “sponsors” in the US, so they have no obvious destinations, Leeser noted.

“A sponsor is someone who is a family member or friend who arranges and has transportation to their destination,” he said.

“Today we have about 50 percent of the people who don’t have a sponsor, they don’t have any money. So we help and work to get them where they want to go.”

Following Leeser on This Week, Adams echoed the Democratic counterpart’s position on “sponsors” — but didn’t directly address the Post’s report that his administration had agreed to take in up to 200 migrants a day from El Paso.

“As the mayor of El Paso said, these migrants and asylum seekers don’t come to a specific city. They’re coming to America,” Adams said Sunday.

News of the deal came Friday as Adams continued to denounce Republican governors over a similar resettlement program. The mayor has also repeatedly blamed the continued influx of new arrivals for the city’s emergency shelter system being overwhelmed.

Hizzoner said Sunday he was focused on “coordinating” with local governments and the Biden administration to address what he called “an American crisis … caused by the human hand of some governors in our southern states” — reiterating his long-standing criticism of GOP leaders, including Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.

“You saw the mayor of El Paso hinting that if you have sponsors, the transition is easier,” Adams said. “If we coordinated properly with the governors in these southern states and said that, let’s find out where the sponsors are, we have large Venezuelan communities in America.”

He added, “There was absolutely no coordination with Governor Abbott and Governor DeSantis just wanted to capitalize on that [as a] political ploy instead of understanding that these are people, these are families, these are human beings.”

El Paso began sending migrants to the Big Apple on August 23. Leeser said at an El Paso City Council working session Monday that he was “grateful” to Adams for welcoming migrants to New York City.

Adams spokesman Fabien Levy on Friday denied that the city agreed to accept the El Paso migrants.

However, City Hall also released a statement from Leeser, which said, “We greatly appreciate the support and cooperation of Mayor Adams, his team and the people of New York as we address this evolving situation, which is changing by the hour changes. ”

As of Wednesday, El Paso’s emergency management had paid for 33 charter buses to travel here, a spokeswoman for the Texas city said. Adams said another six buses arrived on Sunday but didn’t say from where.
