Comedian Nick Nemeroff has died aged 32.
“It is with deep sadness that we announce the sudden death of our beloved brother,” Nemeroff’s family said on Instagram. “Nick’s dedication to stand-up comedy has been impressive and has yielded amazing results.
“It garnered acclaim in Canada and the US, becoming both a ‘Comic’s Comic’ and a hit with viewers who were enthralled by its unique cadence, labyrinthine dead tone and fresh take on deception-driven comedy.
“When Nick was on a comedy show, he was guaranteed to go with new fans. And he deserved it, because in many ways comedy was his life.”
The Nemeroff family concluded their message by writing, “Nick lived his life doing what he loved and that’s how he will be remembered.”
The comedian died on Monday (June 27). The cause of death was not disclosed.
Nemeroff was famous for his 2020 comedy album The pursuit of comedy ruined my lifewhich was nominated for a 2021 Juno Award for Comedy Album of the Year.
He also appeared on the web series CBC Gem in 2022 The new standup waveand in two episodes of Roast Battle Canada.
Many people in the industry have paid tribute to the late comedian.
Comedian Caleb Hearon wrote: “Bloody heartbreaking. I feel so sorry for all the people who loved him. Nick and I have only done a few shows together but I loved meeting him and watching him perform. He was unique.”
Podcaster Joel Edmiston added: “Nick Nemeroff was the best of us, the king, the funniest guy, a great friend. I loved him so much and will miss him forever.”
Jon Dore wrote: “It’s a devastating day for those who knew it. Nick Nemeroff was a handsome man. My condolences to his family and everyone in the comedy world. I admired him a lot.”
Another friend of Nemeroff added: “It’s been a really tough day. @nicknemeroff was one of the nicest people I’ve ever met and one of the funniest comic periods. Thanks for the memories, the laughter and the friendship. It’s really hard to process.”
Comedian Matt O’Brien wrote: “This is incredibly sad news, @nicknemeroff was so original, kind and so funny. I can not believe that. Please watch his clips and listen to his album, there will never be another like him.”
Nemeroff was originally from Montreal, Quebec. He appeared up conan and in 2018 by The Comedy Network Domestic Comics Special and has performed at Just for Laughs, the Winnipeg Comedy Festival and the Halifax Comedy Festival.
He was nominated for the Canadian Comedy Award for Best Breakout Artist at the 18th Canadian Comedy Awards in 2018.
