Days before the planned execution, supporters of Melissa Lucio hold nationwide rallies

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) – Supporters spent Saturday organizing rallies in 16 cities across the United States to save Melissa Lucio’s life.

Lucio is on death row after being convicted of the 2007 murder of her two-year-old daughter, Mariah, in South Texas.

During Saturday’s rallies, organizers plan to collect signatures for the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott in Austin on Monday.

Rallies are planned in Houston, Atlanta, Austin, Boston, Brownsville, Cleveland, OH, Columbus, OH, Dallas, El Paso, Fort Worth, Greensboro, NC, Harlingen, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, San Antonio and Washington, DC

The Houston rally was scheduled for Saturday at 12 noon at Guadalupe Plaza on Runnels Street.

Lucio’s supporters say she was pressured into admitting she beat Mariah to death.

Lucio later said the child fell down a flight of stairs days before paramedics took him to the hospital.

Lucio’s execution is scheduled for April 27th.

Governor Abbott could step in and delay the execution. He could also grant clemency if the majority of the state’s parole board votes in favour.
