Danny DeVito shares his verdict on Colin Farrell’s “edgy” penguin in The Batman.

Danny DeVito has shared his verdict on this The Batman‘s version of the penguin.

DeVito played the villainous Oswald Cobblepot/the Penguin in Burton’s 1992 Batman returns alongside Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne/Batman.

Director Matt Reeves’ The Batman, whom DeVito called “a fancier, more serious gangster Batman,” stars Collin Farrell as the new incarnation of the penguin. Robert Pattinson plays Batman.

“I thought Colin did a great job,” DeVito said The wrapcautiously adding that the film is “certainly a different milieu” than Burton’s “quirky” version.

“I’m a Tim Burton fan,” DeVito added, particularly praising the “unsatisfied” cameo of Paul Reubens – best known for his comic book character Pee-wee Hermans. Reubans, who plays the penguin’s father, throws his deformed child off a bridge, beginning the genesis of the penguin’s villain. “That makes me smile,” DeVito said.

Farrell is unrecognizable as the penguin in Reeves’ three-hour blockbuster, which grossed £97.2million at the box office in its opening weekend. Farrell’s makeup transformation reportedly took four hours to complete.

DeVito commented, “In terms of performances, I thought Colin – who’s a good buddy of mine – I think he did a great job on that. You tip your hat to anyone who sits on the makeup chair for so long. I did it with The Penguin and loved it.”

Farrell’s performance received rave reviews, and Warner Brothers backed his performance by announcing a penguin-centric spin-off series for HBO Max. Farrell will reportedly star and serve as executive producer.
