When book and movie lovers first entered the wizarding world of Harry Potterthey were introduced to a fantastical but relatively bland fictional universe. Chris Columbus directed the first two episodes He left the franchise. Alfonso Cuarons Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban was the next episode. He immediately put his stamp on the series by taking it in a darker direction that lasted until the finale.
According to star Daniel Radcliffe, hiring the four-time Oscar winner was a decision at the time, but it ended up being the best decision for the series.
The Harry Potter film franchise began on a tame note
That Harry Potter Series revolves around an innocent young wizard who is being hunted by a powerful dark lord of the wizarding world. So tame is a relative term when it comes to the franchise.
However, in the first two installments – 2001 Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and 2002 Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets – The threats were relatively harmless. Voldemort was nowhere near at full strength and Harry’s confrontations with his weak nemesis came almost at home within the confines of Hogwarts Castle.
As Harry develops as a wizard, so do the challenges he faces. cuarons Prisoner of Azkaban introduced physical darkness, time travel, an army of demonic dementors, and an ever-expanding circle of enemies.
The darker and more complex themes Cuarón introduced lingered on for the rest of the franchise, and Radcliffe welcomed them.
Alfonso Cuarón’s Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is shaping the future of the franchise
Cuarón’s previous directorial work Prisoner of Azkaban was 2001 Y Tu Mama También. He had never directed a big-budget production before, and he knew nothing about the Potter verse come. But he left his mark on the series.
With the first two Harry Potter Movies, Voldemort is more or less a pipe dream. cuaron Prisoner of Azkaban revealed more sinister layers of He-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named’s conspiracy to kill Harry on the show in 2004. The darker themes and greater challenges followed Harry’s evolution as a wizard, and that tone continued for the rest of the series.
As Radcliffe sees it, the journey to darker and more complex themes began with Cuarón, and the director has handled it brilliantly.
“[The Harry Potter producers] got Alfonso Cuarón to come in and direct the third. Well, by the standards of modern cinema, this decision just looks very smart and good. By the time I think we can forget how utterly insignificant that choice was when the guy who just did it Y Tu Mama También‘ said Radcliffe Rich.
“But again, it’s one of the decisions our producer David Heyman made that really shaped the next few years of the show and allowed us to go to a darker place.”
In addition to driving the series forward, Cuarón made his mark in other ways. He asked Radcliffe, Rupert Grint (Ron Weasley) and Emma Watson (Hermione Granger) to do it write essays about their characters before shooting. He also added some Easter eggs Prisoner of Azkaban this referenced his Mexican heritage (skull resembling the Day of the Dead; a Hogwarts fountain with a snake and eagle à la Mexican flag).
