Danger of severe weather, great heat next Wednesday

RALEIGH, NC (WNCN) — It’s that time of year when many of us head outside to cool off, but you want to make sure the weather is safe for your plans. Later this week we will have a chance to see strong to severe thunderstorms.

The Storm Prediction Center put all of central North Carolina at “slight risk” of potential severe storms on Wednesday. That’s a level 2 out of 5 on the scale.

The main threats of a severe storm that can get under way are destructive winds and hail.

The timing looks mainly in the afternoon and evening on Wednesday.

Not only could we see severe storms, it will also be very hot and humid. Altitudes are around 97 degrees in the triangle and around 100 degrees in the sand hills and southern coastal plain. The heat index values will be in the three-digit range across the board and could reach up to 105 degrees.

We could use the rain, that’s for sure, as the entire state is either unusually dry or in a drought.

Keep an eye on the CBS 17 Storm Team for more forecast updates!
