Dan Walker has said he believes Piers Morgan “overshot the mark” in their breakfast television rivalry.

When Morgan presented ITVs Good morning Britainhe often compared the viewership figures with those of accumulated BBC breakfastwhich Walker moderated.

However, Walker ignored Morgan in a new interview while debating whether he will become more of a straight talker after leaving the BBC for Channel 5.

“I’m sure I’ll have more freedom to speak my mind if I want to, but I’m fighting personality TV,” he said The times, adding: “You can only be authentic who you are, but I don’t want to portray a person like Piers. And I never went down to his level of insults.

Walker continued, “I think he overstepped the mark when he smashed a mug with my face on it.”

Walker was referring to the moment in 2017 when Morgan smashed a mug with the BBC breakfast logo live on air; Walker’s face wasn’t on the mug.

“I don’t have to do anything like that,” he continued. “When I started BBC breakfast, I met him at an event and he said, ‘You’re going to be terrible. We will destroy you.’ But my attitude was to remain calmly confident.

“And I met him again after he left GMB and I said to him, ‘All those years that you’ve been around GMB You mentioned me almost every day and we didn’t mention your name once until the day you left…

“I think there’s room for both types of broadcasting, but Piers? This is not a persona for me to inhabit because I would feel very wrong.

Walker is currently presenting bulletins 5 messageswhich airs on weekdays.
