Cybersecurity incident prevents Maryland Department of Health from publishing COVID-19 Case Data – CBS Baltimore

(CNN) – The Maryland Department of Health has not announced coronavirus case rate data in the nine days since it recovered from a “cybersecurity incident,” the department said on Tuesday.

The department is focused on “gaining full visibility into affected network infrastructure” and working to bring affected IT systems back online following the hack, a department spokesperson said. Andy Owen told CNN in an email.

Meanwhile, data on vaccinations and hospitalizations, along with other information related to the virus, are still being released, Owen said. “Our remaining data reports will be updated shortly.”

Owen declined to answer questions about the cause of the hack or when the department is expected to be fully online again.

Owen said Department of Health websites first went down earlier this month following a security incident. Several state agencies are working with federal and state law enforcement offices “to resolve the case and gather more information,” he said.

A spokesman for Maryland Governor Larry Hogan did not respond to a request for comment.

The cyber attack is just the latest example of a hacking incident plaguing a healthcare-related organization during the pandemic. Los Angeles Chapter on Planned Parenthood Ransomware attack in October compromised personal information of about 400,000 patients.

Despite the enormous damage the coronavirus pandemic has caused to hospitals and clinics, many cybercriminals have refrained from holding these facilities’ computer systems hostage. According to Allan Liska, senior intelligence analyst at cybersecurity firm Recorded Future, there have been more than 100 publicly reported ransomware attacks on healthcare providers in 2020, more than doubled in 2019.

That includes a wave of computer cyberattacks at US hospitals in the fall of 2020. An incident forced University of Vermont Health Network hospitals to delay chemotherapy appointments and scans. mammography.
