Switch? Absolutely not.
An expectant mother on TikTok shared that she is afraid her newborn son will be swapped out for another child after he is born in the hospital.
Her solution? She plans to paint one of her son’s toenails immediately after the birth to avoid a snafu in the hospital.
“People think I’m crazy for the thought of painting my son’s toenails when he’s born,” says the pregnant mom who bears the name My Sahm Lifestyle on the social media platform, wrote in a caption about her video.
“[I’m] paranoid because I’ve heard about babies being switched at birth so I’ll do whatever works and puts my mind at ease!” The 30-year-old continued with the clip, which is set to the tune of Patsy Cline’s 1961 hit was. “Crazy.” The user’s video has received more than 2,000 likes and almost 60,000 views so far.
In her caption, she wrote: “Have you guys noticed you switched at birth? Yes he gets a cute white or blue toe at birth lmfao.”
“change at birth” was a 2011 drama series that premiered on ABC Family (now Freeform) about two teenagers who were switched at birth and grew up in very different environments and experienced different family lives. The show was praised at the time for featuring deaf actors and their extensive use of American Sign Language.
Commentators gave their own take on the idea. “I just wouldn’t let them take my baby out of the room,” wrote one user. “They did everything right in front of me.”
The TikTok influencer even replied, saying: “Of course I would like that too, but sometimes things can happen 😏 I want to be extra prepared in case the baby has to leave the room 😳.”
“My baby never left the room. They did the whole test in front of me and he had a bracelet with my name on it,” commented another.
Someone else, presumably pregnant, added his two cents, agreeing with Sahm: “I did it with my daughter and I’m going to do it with this baby.”
“Our hospital has safety bands that lock the entire floor, also they have to make sure the baby’s band numbers match the mother’s,” wrote another user.
One discussed an alarming experience she claimed her boyfriend’s mother went through after she was born. “My boyfriend’s mom kept waking up to feed him, she got fed up and said, ‘No way is he hungry!’ and it turns out she was feeding another baby too,” they said.
“I’m making a personalized bracelet…you never know what can happen…better safe than sorry,” wrote another.
