KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Do you plan to travel on vacation or with loved ones? Health officials say now is the time to try to help control the spread of COVID-19.

With the number of cases rising in the Kansas City area, those health officials are not calling for quarantine or stay at home. But is asking people to make informed, informed decisions about indoor gatherings.

It’s a busy time of year, with plenty of holiday events and a big game for the Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday night, which is sure to be packed with sports bars to watch. This may be okay if you and those around you have been vaccinated.

But virus watchers say there are factors to consider with Kansas City cases nearly doubling in the past two weeks and deaths up 75% and hospitalizations up 60% over the past month. . That increased number of cases is attributed to Thanksgiving gatherings.

“If you were exposed today, you may not know you have COVID until Christmas Day,” said Alex Francisco, a statistician with the Kansas City Department of Public Health.

This can put you and your loved ones at risk. That’s why Dr. Dana Hawkinson of the University of Kansas Health System says indoor gatherings should be given more scrutiny.

“If you know you’re going to be doing things with people who are at higher risk, you might want to avoid certain social events for now,” says Hawkinson.

“I understand that everyone is sick of wearing masks, people are sick of thinking too much about every meeting they could possibly want to do, but what is the goal, to keep yourself healthy, healthy people you love,” Infectious Diseases Dr. Nathan Barr added.

Health officials say you can ask uncomfortable questions about your exposure, symptoms and vaccine status before making your final vacation-focused plan. If you have a lot of people over the next few days, consider checking in just before picking a tree to open presents or for Christmas dinner.
