COVID case counts? Total nonsense

Congratulations to our public health thought leaders who have finally caught up with the reality that raw COVID case numbers are beyond useless as a metric.

A new Survey of adults in New York City suggests that our testing regime may have more than missed 1.3 million Cases between January and March of this year. The numbers also suggest it’s amazing 27% of the city’s adults may have contracted it during this time.

This huge statistical whiff also means that the official positivity rate – the number by which entire sectors of our economy are counted lived and died for two yearsthe number that closed schools and sent terror attacks through the media – was almost meaningless as a measure.

And that from the beginning, and especially since the advent of vaccines, we should have paid more attention to the actual bad effects of infection.

That means hospitalizations and deaths. That’s what matters.

If someone gets a mild flu and recovers within 24 hours, no one panics. But a few asymptomatic COVID cases in a city school was enough for months close the classroom and trigger insane quarantine protocols.

Even if no evidence ever showed that schools were primary vectors of transmission, and it has been clear for well over a year that the turning back is true.

Should we have paid attention? precise Measurements of the severity of COVID would have made it clear much sooner that the disease poses a major risk, mostly to the elderly and immunocompromised, with approximately 980 under-18 deaths in the US (out of approximately 988,000 total deaths) as of January 2020.

That our public health officials, elected and otherwise, have relied on anything else after the first crazy months of the pandemic is clear misconduct. That they used these meaningless numbers to intimidate skeptics of their policies is beyond appalling.

However, don’t expect apologies. The bureaucrats at the Centers for Disease Control could only tiptoe what this new data seems to suggest as the CDC rolled out its long-overdue new metric — called “community levels.” masking rulesa metric that largely relies on hospitalizations to indicate trouble spots.

And while these poll results must Putting the nail in the coffin in terms of case numbers and positivity rate, they won’t.

Our mayor still insists Masking children under 5 years old due to the increasing number of cases. He still won’t end the private sector Vax mandate (although he will make exceptions for the rich and famous).

But it is obvious that rules based on these numbers have never “followed the science”.

Instead, they followed politics. And in the process caused immense, probably irreparable, social damage.
