The most dramatic end to a Formula One season in history may yet be yet again astonishing to it.
From a camera on the Dutchman’s car, it is clearly visible in front of him, with Hamilton’s car directly to the left of the screen.
So the pictures seem to show Verstappen actually taking the lead over Hamilton before being technically allowed to do so.
The scenes take place before the official safety car ends.
Mercedes launched protests on two counts after the incident, with the story looking like it could rumble all night long.
They ‘relate to an alleged violation of Articles 48.8 and 48.12 of the FIA Sports Regulations’.
It means race managers can even OVERTURN the result was if they found Verstappen had broken any of the rules while overtaking.
Hamilton was leading in Abu Dhabi more than 10 seconds before the safety car was named in lap 54 when Nicholas Latifi crashed into the fence.
That allowed Verstappen to hone more on Hamilton, before using his newer set of tires to get ahead of the seven-time world champion right at death.
He was able to close the gap after the managers decided to allow the cars to overtake Hamilton, leaving the Dutch driver clear in front of him.
It comes after managers initially indicated that covered cars between Hamilton and Verstappen would be in their lineup.
So with both Mercedes and Red Bull are still fighting each other after the protests took place, there is still a lot of drama to come.
