Dan Fogelman told the ‘This Is Us’ cast that he originally planned to film the show
With only a few episodes left, Pearson’s storylines have evolved quite a bit since the pilot. Could all this growth have fit into one movie? During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, This is us Creator Dan Fogelman shared how the show came about. He shared that he originally planned for a This is us Movie.
“There were six or seven people born on the same day, and the twist at the end was that they were all related to the characters Jack and Rebecca,” Fogelman said. “But after 80 pages I was like, ‘I don’t think this is going to last.’ So I gave up and put it away for a while.”
Fortunately, Fogelman eventually returned to the script and adapted it into a series. The show even went through several different titles incl 36 and Happy Birthday before landing This is us.
Will there be a This Is Us movie?
Fogelman didn’t share whether or not he will return to his original This is us movie idea. However, he was quite adamant Completing the character’s storylines during the This is us Season 6 finale.
“I’m really going to miss writing for these guys,” Fogelman said. “That will never happen to me again in my career. And I kind of recognize and accept that.”
Though there likely won’t be a movie after the show, Fogelman says he believes the characters’ legacy will live on.
“I believe the show will remain timeless,” Fogelman said. “It makes me feel good to do six seasons and finish them. It will be seen on all platforms where TV shows are broadcast live. And I think young men and women who are watching the show in their teens and early 20s may one day see it with their kids when their kids are old enough. And I think the show’s legacy will hopefully be that.”

Fans of the series can expect answers during the This Is Us finale
To accept that there probably won’t be a movie based on the show is disappointing. However, fans can take solace because Fogelman promised answers during the speech This is us Final. Fogelman hailed fans for sticking with the show throughout its “twists and turns.” And he promised that “the answers that people are waiting for will all be given”.
“Those early twists and turns and the things that got people talking were the stuff you do to keep a show exciting and fueled in this day and age. And there was a little bit of storytelling magic,” Fogelman said. “And now, in this final season, we’re able to sit a little more linearly in these other things. Because we’re going to the places we’ve teased all these years, and the way we’re going to tell the story this year, the answers that people are waiting for will all end up having for us to sit in of simplicity when we are finally done.”
