Coronation Street fans were left stunned after an iconic character apparently went by a different name when she first arrived in Weatherfield in 2000.
Character Kirk Sutherland – played by Andy Whyment – made his debut in the classic Corrie episodes which are currently shown every weekday on ITV3.
But while fans were delighted that the now-iconic character was mentioned on-screen by his sister Maria – played by Samia Longchambon – they couldn’t help but note that the character’s original name was Mark.
Fans took to social media to express their confusion at the apparent name change.
One wrote: “I’m looking at the old Corries and I’m confused. Maria told Tyrone her brother’s name was Mark. Did you think Kirk was her brother?”
While another said: “I’m confused too.”
A third said: “My theory is that at that point they hadn’t decided he was going to be a normal character and when they decided to bring him back they changed his name to avoid confusion with Mark Redman.”
And a fourth wrote: “I had to see if there was another brother but all I can find is Kirk?”
Luckily, some fans managed to get to the bottom of the confusing error and shared the real reason for the name change.
One die-hard fan replied, “I googled him and for some reason bosses changed his name from Mark to Kirk, just in soap country.”
Corriepedia confirms that Maria’s brother, referred to as “Mark” Sutherland, was a one-off before Kirk came back permanently.”
The character was first played by an uncredited actor during his May 2000 performance.
Actor Andy Whyment then joined and took over the role in October 2000.
The character is a firm favorite with soap opera fans and recently signed a huge deal to keep him on the show for another year.
