Olympic skiing sensation Eileen Gu ruled the red carpet at the 2022 Met Gala on Monday.
The 18-year-old American freestyle ski star, who faced backlash for representing her mother’s home country China at the Beijing Winter Olympics in February, wore a stunning leather mini dress by for her second Met Ball appearance Louis Vuitton.
Gu attended last year’s Met Gala after wearing a white strapless Carolina Herrera bubble gown.
For this year’s event – which required a dress code of “Gilded Glamor and White Tie” – Gu opted for a much more edgy ensemble, which featured a plunging and strapless neckline with a metal belt and black leather boots.
She joined other high-profile stars dressed by Louis Vuitton, including Joe Jonas and his wife Sophie Turner.
Gu – who is signed to IMG Models, who represents the likes of Hailey Bieber and Bella Hadid – has been a fan of the French fashion house for some time. She photographed a campaign with Louis Vuitton in the Italian Dolomites last December, where she won her first World Cup in free skiing. She also signed with Victoria’s Secret and Tiffany and Co.
Gu raised eyebrows in the summer of 2019 when she announced she would represent China, where his mother grew up, at this year’s Winter Games. Her father is American and Gu grew up in San Francisco.
She was under an international microscope as she competed in Beijing, where she won two gold medals and a silver medal in freestyle skiing – but claimed she was able to “block out the hate” by using her voice, “to bring about positive change”.
Gu, who turns 19 in September, plans to go to Stanford in the fall after postponing her entry by a year to focus on the Olympics.
Last week, she shared a post on Weibo, China’s Twitter-like platform, thanking China with a Chinese flag and heart emoji, prompting a flurry of mixed reactions.
