LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Composer Hans Zimmer is no stranger to the Oscars. He’s been nominated for an Oscar 11 times and won once – for “The Lion King” in 1994.

But the former Hollywood star said his nomination for “Dune,” an adaptation of Frank Herbert’s 1965 science fiction novel, feels different after director Denis Villeneuve was dropped in the category. Best Director category.

“I feel heartache for my friend,” Zimmer told Reuters in an interview.

“But I can with a clear conscience and honestly say… I was nominated for his work and for the work of everyone around me and so if any of us win anything. whatever, all in his name, all the same for him.”

For the German composer, “Dune” has always been a dream project. He’s been a fan of Herbert’s intergalactic saga of politics, religion, and giant sandworms since his teenage years, much like Villeneuve.

“It was only when Denis spoke very softly to me one day I had heard of a book called ‘Dune’ that I felt this teenage enthusiasm like a puppy chasing my tail. myself… It’s a big part of me. Zimmer said.

To create otherworldly sounds for the track, Zimmer created the sounds on a synthesizer and then asked a metal sculptor to recreate these sounds using shapes and metals. different.

“Dune,” starring Timothee Chalamet, Zendaya, Javier Bardem, Rebecca Ferguson and Oscar Isaac, received 10 Oscar nominations last week, mostly in the technical category. Hollywood’s highest honors will be awarded on March 27.

“Dune” has been re-released in theaters and IMAX since February 11. It will return to HBO Max on March 10.
