as Philip, This is us newbie Chris Gere has quickly become a staple of the Pearson family tapestry. Phillip’s marriage to Kate (Chrissy Metz) provided a happy breather into the clan struggling with the deteriorating health of their matriarch, Rebecca (Mandy Moore). A time warp reveals that Rebecca succumbs to health issues related to her cognitive problems. This scene has confused viewers since a teaser first debuted in Season 3. However, Geere may not have spilled the moment as heartbreakingly as he initially thought, claiming “everyone” is in for it the last scene the show sixth and final season.
Kate is her mother’s designated caretaker, following Rebecca’s husband Miguel
In a memorable moment during Season 6, Kate was appointed Rebecca’s caretaker in case Miguel (Jon Huertas) wasn’t able to.
The Pearson family’s final Thanksgiving ended with Rebecca gathering her children to discuss the hardships they might endure as their illness progresses.
“I need you all to hear my voice now, your mother’s voice with all her abilities. You won’t make your life smaller because of me,” she said.
“What’s happening to me won’t hold you back,” Rebecca continued. “So you’re taking risks. Take big steps, even if they are small steps. Drive your life forward in any direction that moves you. I’m your mother and I’m sick. And I ask you to be fearless. And if that seems like a tall order, well guess what? It is, but the only acceptable answer is a resounding ‘yes ma’am’.”
Later, Rebecca and her daughter had a quiet moment. Kate asks her mother, “Why me?” Rebecca replies, “You are my daughter and my best friend. It always was you, Kate.”
In a flash-forward, fans learn that despite not appearing in a scene at her mother’s deathbed, Kate is very much alive and ready to look after Rebecca if needed.
