Chris Evans calls critics of ‘Lightyear’ same-sex kiss ‘idiots’

‘Lightyear’ star Chris Evans has slammed critics of a same-sex kiss in his new film, calling them ‘idiots’.

Evans’s comments – whose brother, actor Scott Evans, is gay – come after the flick was banned in 14 countries over a kiss between two female characters, according to the Independent.

“The real truth is these people are idiots,” Evans, 41, said during an interview with Reuters published on Tuesday.

“Any time we’ve made social advances in waking up, American history, human history, is a history of constant social awakening and growth, and that does us well,” he added.

The controversy stems from a character named Hawthorne (played by Uzo Aduba) kissing her wife in a brief scene depicting milestones in the character’s life.

“There will always be people who are scared and unaware and trying to hold on to what was before. But these people are dying like dinosaurs,” Evans continued.

“I think the goal is to ignore them, to march forward and embrace the growth that makes us human.”

Lightyear producer Galyn Susman also weighed in, saying the kiss adds to the story.

“We have a relationship here that will last a lifetime. It’s loving, it’s supportive, and it shows Buzz exactly what he doesn’t have, and that’s the whole point,” Susman said.

“We should all be so fortunate to have such a relationship in our lives,” Susman concluded.

Pixar came under fire for removing the kiss after employees sent an open letter explaining that Disney had a history of censoring same-sex affection and in response to Florida’s controversial “Don’t Say Gay” law .

The studio later restored the kiss after continued pressure from its staff.

Lightyear, which received mixed reviews from critics, will hit theaters on June 17th.
