HONG KONG (Reuters) – China’s top representative at a semi-automatic gambling center in Macau will begin advising the former Portuguese colonial government on national security issues, the news agency reported. tons of state news Xinhua reported on Friday.

The move highlights increased scrutiny from Beijing over issues in Macau after the central government announced Chinese gambling-related money flows into Macau and gaming hubs. Another play is a national security risk.

Last week, Macau authorities arrested Alvin Chau, the founder of Macau’s largest betting operator, which attracts highly skilled players to play at casinos, along with 10 others, for allegedly used Macau as the basis for an illegal “online betting platform”.

An arrest warrant for Chau has also been issued by the city of Wenzhou, mainland China, accusing him of forming an extensive network of junket dealers that help citizens engage in gambling activities and set up a company that helps gamblers make cross-border money transfers.

The move is seen as a warning that the authorities of Macau and mainland China are taking a zero-tolerance approach to the promotion of gambling in mainland China, where it is illegal.

Xinhua reported that Macau had asked Beijing to appoint a national security adviser in the city, and Beijing had tasked Liaison Office head Fu Ziying with “monitoring, guiding, controlling coordinate and support” the government in this regard.

Beijing will also appoint three national security technical advisers from within the Liaison Office, Beijing’s main representative body in Macau.
