CHINA has revealed its aerospace plans for the next 5 years, intensifying the space race with the United States.
China’s State Council last week announced its space exploration ambitions in a new white paper.
The document details Beijing’s plans for the next five years, including steps it will take to dominate the aerospace sector.
Two of China’s biggest goals include launching its own space telescope and completing its own space station.
The space telescope, currently under development, is called Xuntian, or the China Space Station Telescope (CSST).
CSST is expected to have a main mirror 2 meters (6.6 feet) in diameter, as well as a field of view 300 times larger than that of NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope.
The wide field of view will allow the telescope to see up to 40% of the sky within ten years.
If all goes according to plan, the telescope will orbit Earth with the Chinese space station and possibly dock periodically.
“The telescope will be set up in an optical module that can fly independently in orbit to bring more efficiency to the space probe,” said Zhou Jianping, chief designer of the spacecraft program. people of china, told China Central Television in March of last year.
“Meanwhile, we will make it close to orbit with the space station in the future. This will help us refuel the telescope and conduct upgrades in orbit.[s] Jianping added.
CSST is expected to launch in 2024.
Other notable space missions outlined in the Chinese white paper include exploring Jupiter, building a research station on the Moon, and bringing back samples from Mars.
China’s recently announced plans highlight its very real efforts to overtake the US as the world’s leading aerospace superpower.
In other news, Apple unveiled a bunch of new emojis for the iPhone, including a pregnant man and two saucy symbols.
Experts have warned that future space launches could be in jeopardy if “dumb” regimes like Russia don’t stop blowing up debris.
And the most popular phone since a millennium was announced, shocking many to learn it wasn’t an iPhone.
