And Beijing has been warned that it faces isolation and penalties if it helps Moscow as fears of World War III mount.

It came after US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan met Chinese diplomat Yang Jiechi in Rome.

Washington told allies in NATO and several Asian countries that China has signaled its willingness to provide Russia with military and economic support but is expected to deny the plans.

A US official said: “It’s real, it’s momentous and it’s really alarming.”

The White House said, “We are deeply concerned about China’s rapprochement with Russia at this time, and the National Security Advisor spoke directly on those concerns and the potential impact and consequences of certain actions.”

Chinese companies that defy US restrictions on exports to Russia could be cut off from American equipment and software they need to manufacture their products, US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo said last week.

But Yang said China is determined to resolve the conflict, adding, “China firmly opposes all words and actions that spread false information and distort and slander China’s position.”

Ryan Hass of the Brookings Institution said Chinese support for Russia “would significantly narrow its path to maintaining non-hostile relations with the United States and the West.”

It comes after Russia reportedly asked China for help last month with its invasion of Ukraine.

Wladimir Putin‘s side is said to have asked the Chinese President Xi Jinping for military equipment and support after the February 24 invasion.

Several US officials have since said Beijing could undermine Western efforts to help Ukraine New York Times reports.

And Mr. Sullivan said Washington believed China knew Russia planned an invasion Ukraine before it happened.

He also warned that Beijing would “absolutely” face consequences if it offered support to Russia.

He told CNN, “We are communicating directly and privately with Beijing that there will absolutely be consequences for large-scale efforts to circumvent sanctions or support Russia to complement them.”
