Chet Holmgren, Gonzaga is doomed by nasty phone calls

blank

Chet Holmgren will likely play his next basketball game as a pro – perhaps as the No. 1 overall pick in the NBA draft. But his last collegiate game was marred by two terrible foul calls that forced him out early.

During Gonzaga’s 74-68 loss to Arkansas in the Sweet 16 of March Madness 2022, the seven-footer picked up two fouls in the first half and his third early in the second. But as he got into a shooting rhythm, he was called out for a fourth foul – in which it seemed he was doing nothing but playing a solid defense.

If anything, it looked like Au’Diese Toney from Arkansas could have been called out for an offensive foul for a tackle on Holmgren’s chest. But it was still called, forcing Holmgren to play it safe for the rest of the game.

what he did And yet, not much later in the game, he was called out for an equally questionable foul:

It certainly looked like Holmgren was going straight upstairs, but the officials decided otherwise. And it was a consistent decision – the call threw the star center out of the game.

Gonzaga was six points behind when Holmgren fouled and ended up losing by six points. Any hope of a comeback was gone.

The Bulldogs shot just 37.5 percent from the field – well below their season average and what they achieved in their first two games – and their shooting problems are much more to blame for another disappointing NCAA tournament loss. But Holmgren must be frustrated that he wasn’t able to give his team a helping hand.

Arkansas now moves to the Elite Eight, where they face off against Mike Krzyzewski and Duke, who scraped past Texas Tech on Thursday night.
