Chelsea vs Tottenham LIVE: Davies own goal puts Blues in control in EFL Carabao Cup

CHELSEA is hosting Tottenham TONIGHT in the first leg of the exciting Carabao Cup semi-final at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues – with Romelu Lukaku back in the starting line-up – soon took the lead after Kai Havertz’s shot was blocked by Davinson Sanchez.

And it was even worse when coach Antonio Conte returned in the 34th minute, after a combination of Japhet Tanganga and Ben Davies caused the Welshman to head his own goal to double Chelsea’s lead.

Meanwhile, tomorrow night’s other Carabao Cup semi-final – between Arsenal and Liverpool – has been postponed after Liverpool asked to postpone the match because of the Covid outbreak at the club.

  • Cole hard truth

“Skys expert Ashley Cole was unimpressed with Spurs’ defense, especially on the second goal.

“(Tanganga) Putting it down and clearing it with his left foot wouldn’t be worse than what he did.

“You need to show bravery and composure on the ball.

“But I feel there have been many times when Tottenham haven’t shown that and I think that has cost them.”

  • MOM

Ziyech added: “We forgot to end the game.

“We had a lot of chances but we have another game to get the job done.”

Sky decided not to ask the midfielder if Lukaku had apologized to his teammates.”

  • MOM

Ziyech said: “I think it was a good performance by the whole team, the first half was strong and the second half had a bit of ups and downs.

“But we got the job done.

“We put pressure on them and didn’t give them space and time, especially in the first half.

“For a moment we could have killed the game but didn’t.”

    94. Lukaku ended his evening with another missed opportunity.

Werner did something impressive with a slightly sunken pass into the darling Inter striker but his shot went right into Lloris.

Chelsea was wasted and Spurs were, most of the time, a waste of time.

All here. Please explain that, Antonio.

  • Chelsea 2 Spurs 0

    90. Azpilicueta limps with a hammy problem, being replaced by teenage striker Harvey Vale.

Rudiger tried his best to give Spurs a late chance with some terrible dribbling but Tottenham’s attack was too rough to punish his mistakes.

The sound of ‘oles’ echoed throughout Stamford Bridge every time Chelsea completed a pass.

It was a very eye-catching night for West London fans against their nasty opponents.

  • Chelsea 2 Spurs 0

    86. Marcos Alonso could have done more with a free kick from a good position but he cleared the ball wide.

Azpilicueta is struggling with his hamstring but Spurs have the ball and are organizing in attack.

The Blues were clear but Tottenham got the ball back and created another chance that needed to be conceded by Kepa.

Chelsea surged forward at the other end, where Lukaku created a chance but Sanchez covered the danger.

  • Chelsea 2 Spurs 0

    84. This one is coming out.

Chelsea got off to a bad start and then got chills when they were two goals down.

Spurs enjoyed a brief spike after being fielded by Conte in the first half.

But the away team has never really shown the bravery or the desire to score two goals away from the European champions.

Lukaku has yet to respond to the displeasure of Chelsea fans with anything substantial.

  • Chelsea 2 Spurs 0

    80. Another change for the Blues when Ziyech was joined for Christian Pulisic.

Spurs trade Moura or Gil and Son for Lo Celso.

Hardly inspired the substitutes, so Conte seemed to have only preserved his first team-mates in the final few minutes.

Tanganga headed home a good chance to go ahead of Rudiger from a free kick.

  • Chelsea 2 Spurs 0

    77. Ziyech blew another good chance miles away after Tottenham decided not to mark him – or even acknowledge his existence.

A deep cross from the left found the former Ajax man plenty of space and he had his first chance at a volley.

But his attack shot to the edge of the foot and into the rack.

Tottenham luckily this didn’t turn into a match.

  • Chelsea 2 Spurs 0

    71. Chelsea double substitutions.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Mateo Kovacic replace Mason Mount and Saul Niguez.

Tottenham make a change as Harry Winks replaces Oliver Skipp.

Midfield looks new for both sides in the last 20 minutes.

  • Chelsea 2 Spurs 0

    70. Moura had a chance with a volley after Royal hit a cross but it went over the bar.

Tottenham are like a completely different team this half but they still haven’t really scored a goal.

A sharper Lukaku or more reliable Werner would help Chelsea leave this Spurs side.

But they are still a faint threat if they can somehow score a goal over the course of the game.

65.Timo Werner misses – yes that’s right, this fake striker misses another custodian.

A superb pass that clears the Spurs defense and leaves the striker with a good chance.

He decided to lobby Lloris but his attempts to tame were arrested by the outstretched Frenchman.

Continuing to play Werner in the central striker position seems to be a torture.

  • Chelsea 2 Spurs 0

    66. Another opportunity for Tottenham when Moura and Ryal combine on the right.

That was nothing but Ben Davies continuing to put pressure on the other side.

Moura is having a much larger influence.

  • Chelsea 2 Spurs 0

    62. Werner almost scored – yes, Timo Werner.

Spurs insisted on withdrawing from the German striker so he could hit the ball long range.

Later, Sarr was given a gold penalty for catching Kane with his bare arm. The call is appropriate because it doesn’t appear to be a malicious elbow attack.

  • Chelsea 2 Spurs 0

Poor Timo Werner showed his first sign of action but was called offside shortly after his fifth touch of possession.

It looked like the perfect match to build his confidence after the first 45 but Tottenham seemed to have had to toughen up at half-time so he won’t be as happy as Kai Havertz did.

Chelsea are beating it, encountering and probing.

And then Tanganga tried his best to give Chelsea a chance with a dribbling effort in the midfield.

  • Chelsea 2 Spurs 0

    55. Harry Kane’s heat map looks like a cry for help as he failed to handle the ball inside the Chelsea box.

Lukaku created a great save for Ziyech, but he made a left footed shot so clear that Lloris caught it almost sarcastically.

Moura then created an opening for Ndombele on the other end but he shot the ball wide.

The half got off to an exciting start with Spurs showing off a number of games.

  • Chelsea 2 Spurs 0

    51. Spurs look like a party has left the hair dryer half the time.

They launched another attack until Son was masterfully handled by Saul.

The Blues returned to their weary seats with Alonso’s cross and Lukaku connecting with a volley that put the ball into Lloris’s hand.

  • Chelsea 2 Spurs 0

    48. Ndombele is suspended for a free kick just outside the box after Sarr’s foul.

Son and Ndombele prefer angular looks.

But the Englishman hit the target and Kepa had to make a precise save.

  • Everything changes here

Timo Werner came on for Kai Havertz, wonder how many chances Timo could have missed in 45 minutes instead of 90.

And Conte shuffled his defense with midfielder Ndombele into the disaster zone in place of Matt Doherty.

The Spurs’ five returnees have now become four – the people on earth know if that can be of any help.

  • Chelsea 2 Spurs 0

Tottenham are definitely missing Eric Dier but I’m not sure how much he will lack these teammates.

Conte will be paid with the changes he makes in the coming minutes.

Chelsea have enough talent on the bench to make it even more difficult the next game.

And Lukaku will want to make up for his missed opportunity.

Hugo Lloris might want to think about faking a cough and running home before this gets out of hand.

  • Chelsea 2 Spurs 0

The second target is a disaster.

Lack of communication, lack of composure and humor.

Tanganga has time to hit the ball and move it to the z row.

But he panicked and stabbed Ben Davies in the face of unsuspecting poor fellow.

You will be very disappointed if you let your partner bring that up on your Sunday.

  • Chelsea 2 Spurs 0

Any Tottenham player who survives the break will consider himself lucky.

With just 31% of possession and NO attempt to score, the away team knocked Bridge out.

Havertz was certainly awarded the opening goal but it was still something of a shock for Spurs.

This is not a defense that is desperate to attack from the back and control the game.

  • Chelsea 2 Spurs 0

    47. Plucky’s Lucas Moura tried his best to create a chance right after the opening whistle but fell short of support and missed it.

The referee actually called for a period of time so the Spurs cover men could take a breather and turn around.

There’s not much on the bench for Conte to play with so he may have to come up with something clever on the tactical board.

  • Chelsea 2 Spurs 0

    45. If this is a boxing match, the referee will look very closely and wonder if this action should be stopped or not.

Tottenham seem to have returned to the dark ages before Conte.

It’s amazing how the fiery little Italian has managed to keep his hair so far as his sides are already stinking.

Expect big changes at break time, if not in personnel, then certainly in tactics and efforts.

  • Chelsea 2 Spurs 0

    41. It should have been 3-0 and it was all done but Lukaku headed it perfectly.

Ziyech was able to afford a cross on Kings Road.

It landed on the Belgian’s head but the connection was rubbish and the ball went wide.

Bad defense against Spurs, they go with someone else there. Chelsea vs Tottenham LIVE: Davies own goal puts Blues in control in EFL Carabao Cup
