CHELSEA is said to have joined Manchester United and Liverpool in their pursuit of Barcelona’s Ronald Araujo.
Last week we reported on the growing level of concern in the Nou Camp club that two rivals of the Northwest Premier League can rob them of their prized leads.
And they say South America is ‘extremely grateful’ Barcelona but is opening the door for a lucrative move to Britain.
The 22-year-old star arrived at the Nou Camp from River Boston on the Uruguay side in 2018.
The defender was joined by the first team and the Uruguay national team.
His contract expires in 2023 but Barcelona wants to reward his progress with a new 5 year deal.
The centre-back’s wage demands could ‘complicate’ negotiations with claims ‘there is a concern in Barcelona that they may not meet the terms he is asking’ to stay.
And with the financial difficulties facing Barcelona, they know that the Red Devils and the Anfield club have the ‘financial power’ to fuel their interest and open the attack on South America.
Last week it was reported that Liverpool are ‘particularly interested’ in Araujo and have had their scouts monitor him throughout 2021.
Chelsea have Thiago Silva, Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger out of contract at the end of the season and are looking for replacements.
But Barcelona have recently secured the long-term futures of young stars Pedri and Ansu Fati and having Araujo commit his future is a big priority.
They are desperate to avoid a situation similar to the one they faced with Ilaix Moriba last summer.
They were forced to cash it and sell it to RB Leipzig after he refused to extend it after entering the final year of his contract.
