The chef, 65, told Samantha Rea of her love of quiet discos, ‘vanity’ lighting and brick phones.

What technology can’t you live without?

My Magimix Gelato Expert machine. My 13 year old daughter and she have started baking and using all of my appliances, so this is a new item I bought for her.

It is very easy to use. You just put the ingredients in, it mixes the gelato and then comes out the other end. Great! We can’t live without it because we’re making all these gelato!

If you don’t have money, what technology will you buy tomorrow?

I want to install my own cinema. My children are calling me to do it. I had the room, but the investment in technology was a bit expensive. I also like an outdoor monitor, so I can watch all my sports in the garden.

People might be surprised to know what kind of tech lover you are?

I like a silent discotheque. On New Year’s Eve, during the pandemic, I had a silent disco in my woods with my wife and kids. I used my Bose headphones. It’s fun – if you’ve never been to a silent disco, you have to go!

Have you ever had a technical error on your TV?

Oh yes, I have a lot of things. I was making pancakes live on BBC1 with Vanessa Feltz and I forgot to turn on the gas. People are shouting and screaming behind the camera, and giving me all these horrible signs, but I don’t understand what’s going on with them.

So when I poured the pancake mix in, the pan was cold. I have a minute to make a pancake, but I can’t. This was on Pancake Day! Another time, I was on Lorraine, and they gave me a headset, so they could talk to me with my ear, but they didn’t turn it on. I ran for more than two minutes, because I couldn’t hear them telling me to shut up! That sucks on TV, that’s probably why they didn’t invite me back!

What’s your favorite tech memory?

The first tech I bought, which I’m proud of, was a car phone. I bought a BMW just because it had a phone in it. It was in the 1990s, when they first came out and the phone weighed two tons. It looks like a brick.

I’m always on this phone, I showed it off to everyone. Whenever I’m at a traffic light, I pick up the phone and talk to people. Even in the parking lot. I’m a man.

Have you bought any tech pandemic yet?

I bought one of those stands that you put your phone in, it lights up when you’re doing Zoom. A selfie ring! I have one from Neewer. It’s an 18 inch light ring because I’m a bit vain when it comes to lighting.

What is your most extravagant tech purchase?

A few months before the first lockup, I bought myself an iPhone 10. I’ve never had an iPhone before. I paid £1,100 upfront, but it was well worth it because I love it and I do everything on it. I’ve lost my job due to the pandemic, with restaurants closed, but I’m filming cooking classes on my phone.

I want to upgrade to iPhone 12 but I’m afraid because I forgot all the password. I can’t go through the stressful process of setting everything up on a new phone!
