The cost of Christmas dinner is the cheapest in the past five years as supermarkets slash prices in the battle for customers.

If you buy the cheapest possible options for 11 Christmas dinner dishes – including turkey and all kinds of trimmings – will be 5p cheaper than 2020.

Supermarkets are cutting prices to compete with shoppers – Lidl started the price war by cutting prices vegetables cost only 19p a bag.

Good Housekeeping has added 11 of the cheapest festive foods across major UK supermarkets.

But it did not share details on which supermarkets are selling bargain items this year.

Six out of Christmas staples – sprouts, carrots, beets, stuffing, Christmas puddings and pies – are cheaper this year.

Mince pies are the most discounted – the price of a pack of 8 this year is down 52p compared to 2020.

The cheapest Brussels sprouts this year is also 32p less.

Meanwhile, the cheapest prices on potatoes, cranberry sauce, Christmas cake and brandy butter remain.

The only more expensive item, the turkey, went up in price within 1 minute.

Research shows that the best prices you will get if you shop at different supermarkets.

Emilie Martin, Good Housekeeping’s director of consumer affairs, said: “After a few years of financial uncertainty and a backdrop of rising inflation, it’s encouraging to know that you can afford to spend. for Christmas dinner this year less than last year.”

“This is good news for those who are worried about the cost of Christmas but still want to make the festival special.”

Separate study of which? revealed that Aldi is the cheapest supermarket if you want to shop all your Christmas dinner in one place.

Discount groceries are offering turkey and all kinds of trimmings for just £28.17 – or £4.70 per person for a group of six.

Another study by Kantar showed that the average cost of a with a traditional dinner for four at £27.48.
